Another Hawk?!?

This past Friday I picked up this really nice 1989 Honda Hawk GT from a guy selling it on Craigslist. So now I have two Hawks. I will be selling my '88 Hawk to C and will keep the '89 as my project bike.

Got the bike and some parts...

About a month ago I picked up this ghetto Hawk. Not much selection available on the island. Since I am changing out almost everything, my main concern was the frame, engine and gas tank. Of those three things, the 2 former were in pretty good condition while the engine is in ok condition, as far as I can see externally.

I cut up and threw away the very rusted TBR exhaust system. I have already sold the stock subframe to Hawkhan @ hawkgtforum.com and the seat cowl to Doug Thompson.

Here are some pics of the parts that I have been collecting for my project.

1st Love

A bit of my Hawk history: Back in 1992 when I was a junior in high school, I had this brilliant idea to get a racing 2-stroke go-cart. I wanted to get this so I could drive/race it around my home town! Yea, great idea huh? Well my dad though so too and he never got me one. Then I picked up the August 1992 issue of Cycle World and I saw the Two Brothers Racing RC31. I knew right then and there that is what I wanted.

Love at first sight some might say. It just so happened that a dealership nearby had a red 1989 Hawk for sale. I spoke to my father about it and he said it was ok to get it. Now remember he didn't want me to get a go-cart because that would be dangerous, but a motorcycle is ok?! Go figure. Granted I would have been driving a racing, off road use only go-cart on the streets, which wouldn't have been a bright idea. Anywho, we went down and he purchased my first bike (first Hawk also) for me. The dealership had to deliver it to my house since I never rode a motorcycle before nor did I have my license. That night I jumped on it and started riding around the block.

I took the MSF RSC and got my license on the Hawk when most were renting motor scooters to take the license test. A few months into my relationship with my Hawk, I made some friends with a group that rode at our local track. In early 1993 I went to my first track day and I was hooked. Shortly after, I purchased my second bike (and second Hawk - a red 1989 Hawk). A few months after that I decided that all the motorcycle riding I wanted to do would be at the track. So I sold my street Hawk to a friend and rode solely at the track. 1994 was my first full season racing and that was done on my race Hawk. I won the Lightweight SS championship that year.

A few years ago I started longing for a Hawk again. I joined the Hawk Mailing List and slowly collected information and parts. This past Monday I purchased a Hawk. This blog will follow the progress of the build up of my project RC31.

Below are some pictures of my second Hawk (my track Hawk).
